ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Regional stability and security were among the topics focused on at a meeting between Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi and several Arab leaders in the Jordanian capital of Amman on Tuesday.
“Iraq is committed to a strategic vision that supports the stability of the region and creates an opportunity for calm, and this path is based on the continuation of dialogue between the actors at the regional level,” tweeted the Iraqi PM after the meeting with King Abdullah II of Jordan, and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.
Kadhimi reiterated his country's "firm position on issues of common interest" with Amman and Cairo at the tripartite summit, including on the topics of security and regional stability, according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s office published in their official Whatsapp group.
"We affirm the importance of the collective will to defeat terrorism and eliminate it through comprehensive regional and international cooperation and confront all those who support terrorism with financing and arming," the statement quotes Kadhimi as saying during the meeting.
"Our region does not need new wars and conflicts. Rather, we need all of us to stand together and work towards achieving the aspiration of our peoples in terms of security, stability, development and a better life, and to work to make peace," he added
During the tenure of the previous Iraqi government under the leadership of Adil Abdul Mahdi, Iraq placed emphasis on cooperation and improved relations with neighboring countries - including Egypt and Jordan.
Iraq and Jordan signed an agreement in February 2019 through which Iraq would lift tariffs on Jordanian products, while Jordan would buy 10,000 barrels of oil per day from Iraq.
Iraq, Jordan and Egypt agreed on closer economic cooperation in March 2019 when Iraq's former PM Mahdi, Jordan's King, and Egypt's Sisi met in Cairo.
Enhanced economic cooperation between the three countries topped the agenda of Tuesday's summit.
"The vision of Iraq focuses on...distancing ourselves from conflicts, achieving integration and economic cooperation between the three countries through the development of joint industrial (economic) zones, and the need to create multi-faceted strategic partnerships with the aim of strengthening the presence of the Iraqi economy jointly with the economies of Arab countries," the statement adds.
"Our peoples can no longer tolerate more conflicts."
